Role Summary
The Computer Operator is a critical hands on role responsible for server build, deployment, troubleshooting, and lifecycle inventory management within an IBM Cloud data center environment. Ensuring accurate asset tracking, operational readiness, and compliance with data center standards.
The role requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Server Build, Deployment & Hardware Operations
• Rack, build, cable, configure, and provision Intel and AMD server platforms.
• Install and troubleshoot Windows Server, Linux, and Unix-based operating systems.
• Deploy, rack, and cable Cisco Layer 2 networking equipment.
• Perform hardware diagnostics, testing, and quality assurance on servers and components.
• Professionally troubleshoot and resolve hardware incidents through ticketing systems.
• Install, test, label, and manage copper and fiber cabling using standard data center protocols.
• Maintain accurate logs, escalation notes, and resolution documentation in ticketing and messaging systems.
• Conduct daily walkthroughs of server, storage, and inventory areas.
• Handle NextGen Virtual Private Cloud repair nodes and bring up process (Linux skills)
Asset Management & Inventory Control
• Track, process, and verify all hardware assets using the Inventory Management System (IMS) by scanning serial numbers and maintaining hardware virtual images (HWOs).
• Process and validate RMAs, coordinating with Networking, DC Operations, and other teams to ensure proper documentation and testing records.
• Conduct LPR inventory cycle counts and audits multiple times per week; coach others on correct audit procedures.
• Perform daily SPR audits and restocking based on usage.
• Manage incoming and outgoing shipments between data centers and vendors, including packing, palletizing, documentation, and audit archiving.
• Tag, organize, label, and store inventory to ensure efficient access and compliance with inventory standards.
• Set aside and prepare hardware for customer orders, pre-builds, cross-shipping, and special projects via approved tickets.
• Coordinate with DC Operations and Supply teams for EOL server processing, liquidation preparation, manifesting, and shipping.
• Proactively monitor inventory ticket queues and communicate with customers and internal stakeholders to ensure timely execution.
• Identify low stock levels and escalate to the Supply Operations Supervisor.
Required Skills & Abilities
• Strong organizational, multitasking, and time management skills.
• High attention to detail with accurate reporting and documentation.
• Ability to follow standard operating procedures and escalation paths.
• Effective written and verbal communication.
• Comfortable working shifts (day, evening, overnight) in a fast-paced environment.
Required Qualifications
• 1+ year of inventory control experience.
• 2+ years working in a data center environment or equivalent experience at SBT III level.
• Experience troubleshooting servers, workstations, and hardware components.
• Working knowledge of Windows Server, Linux, or Unix installations.
• Experience with ticketing systems and inventory tools.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook (Access a plus).
• Valid driver’s license with required local endorsements.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be authorized to work in the country without company sponsorship.
• Fluent in English (French is a strong advantage).
Preferred Qualifications
• 2+ years of inventory control experience.
• Experience with Cisco networking hardware.
• Web server or database installation experience.
• Forklift or material-handling certification.
